Delivery Volunteer Information
Where do I go to volunteer? Volunteers meet at OHAAT’s storage facility in Huntingdon Valley. The address is: 555 Welsh Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. (Note: Our facility can be difficult to find. Welsh Road is not the same as Old Welsh Road / Route 63. Old Welsh Road meets Huntingdon Pike about 1/2 mile north of where Welsh Road meets Huntingdon Pike.)
Once you get to OHAAT’s facilty, you’ll be asked to sign a Release Form. Then you can help load OHAAT’s box truck full of beds and bed kits!
Before heading out for deliveries, we’ll provide you with driving directions to each home. We typically make deliveries to between 5 and 8 homes. They are almost always in the city, usually in North and West Philadelphia.
What kind of training do I need? No training is required! All deliveries are run by a Lead Volunteer who is trained by OHAAT staff.
How much lifting is required? OHAAT delivers twin mattresses and foundations that weigh about 30 pounds each. They can easily be carried by two people, one at each end. We also have lighter items (bed kits filled with pillows and linens) that any volunteer, young or old, can carry.
What should I wear? We recommend dressing in layers and wearing comfortable, closed-toed shoes. Be prepared to face the elements – we deliver rain or shine!
Do I have to drive? OHAAT’s Lead volunteer will drive the truck to each home on the delivery schedule. Other volunteers can follow in their own vehicles. (We recommend carpooling.) Keep in mind that most deliveries are in Philadelphia – drivers should be comfortable navigating the city’s streets.
How old do I have to be to volunteer? We recommend that volunteers be at least 14 years old. All volunteers under 18 must have a chaperone and bring a Release Form signed by a parent or guardian.
How many people can volunteer at once? Individuals can sign up for deliveries on our Volunteer Opportunities page. We can also schedule deliveries for private groups of 4 to 6 people. For more information, call 215-646-7812 or fill out the form on our Volunteer page.
