By Becky Sedmak, OHAAT’s Executive Director.
It’s no secret that the Beds for Kids program is growing. When I joined the OHAAT team 5 years ago, we were serving about 350 children annually. When Megan, our Program Coordinator, joined the team 2 years ago, we were serving about 700 children. And this year we’re on target to reach over 1,050 children! Growth like this often comes with growing pains, and to be honest, Megan and I have been feeling the pain for a while now. We need a third employee who can absorb some of our responsibilities and help ensure that OHAAT’s growth is sustainable.
And now (drum roll, please), I am very excited to introduce you to our new employee Sarah Martin. Her official title is Operations and Volunteer Coordinator, and she’ll be working with our suppliers, in kind donors, and volunteers. Many of you will meet her over the next few months, but in the meantime, I’ve asked her to answer five questions, so we can all get to know her:
What are you most excited about regarding your new position?
I am extremely excited to be putting my time and effort towards doing good in the community I grew up in! Having met you, Megan and the board, I’m also excited to be part of an incredibly dedicated team of diverse talents.
Who is one person you would love to meet, living or dead?
In college I was fortunate enough to meet one of two life mentors, Hunter Doherty a.k.a “Patch” Adams. It was everything I hoped it would be, including a surprise, and more. The other person I wish I could have met is Nelson Mandela. He succeeded against all odds and with an unfailing spirit I wish to embody everyday. I would have thanked him for his example in my life and asked him how he managed his mind during those moments of uncertainty.
Do you have a secret talent?
I love to build things from reclaimed materials! Most people do not know I have a wood shop at home. It is a creative hobby of mine that also helps me relax.
What’s your favorite thing to do on a Saturday (other than deliver beds, of course!)?
My favorite thing to do on a Saturday morning is get up early and check out the local flea markets!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I have always wanted to be able to fly. I love traveling and I have always enjoyed the journey as much as the destination. I think that superpower would help me the most.
If you have questions of your own for Sarah, don’t hesitate to contact her. I know that she’d love to hear from you! She can be reached directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and 267-607-3456.
