Charlotte's Story

Charlotte loved the bedroom she shared with her two sisters. The walls were a pretty pale green, and even though the room could feel a little cramped with three girls, it mostly felt cozy to her. Charlotte cried for days when her parents told her that the building they lived in was deemed “uninhabitable,” and that they were being evicted. Charlotte’s parents searched high and low for alternate housing, but could not find anything affordable. They put all their things in a storage unit, and moved into a hotel, hopeful that another apartment would turn up soon.

Months and months went by, and still no apartment turned up. The small amount of savings the family had put by dwindled to nothing. They could not afford to pay for their storage unit, and lost all of their belongings.

Luckily, Charlotte’s family connected with a homeless shelter that was able to get them into transitional housing, followed by permanent housing that the family could afford.  Charlotte was overjoyed to be back in a safe place with her family, even if it was completely empty due to the storage unit loss. Her Mom and Dad were relieved too, but worried about the lack of basic necessities available for their daughters. How could they get the rest they needed without a proper place to sleep? How long would it take to save up to buy beds and sheets and blankets and pillows? Would they be able to make it happen before the weather turned cold?

She referred the three girls, and in just over a week, the OHAAT box truck pulled up to deliver three brand new beds and bedtime bags for each child. Charlotte was so excited when she opened her bedtime bag--a new comforter with pale green stripes on it, the same color as her old room!

A message from Charlotte:

The impactful work of the Beds for Kids program is made possible by supporters like you. Will you donate today to help the thousands of children like Charlotte in our community? Kids who do not have a bed of their own to sleep in, a book to read at bedtime, or a stuffed animal to snuggle with at night? Any amount will make a difference. Donate today, and change the life of a family in need.

On behalf of Charlotte, her parents, and the entire OHAAT family, thank you for helping to end child bedlessness in our community.
